Julie Swann

Biography

Dr. Julie Swann is the Harold R. and Mary Anne Nash Professor in the Stewart School of Industrial & Systems Engineering and co-founder and co-director of the Center for Health and Humanitarian Logistics in the Supply Chain and Logistics Institute of Georgia Tech.

She received her B.S. in Industrial Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1996 and her M.S. (1998) and Ph.D. (2001) in Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences from Northwestern University.

Dr. Swann focuses on developing models and analytical methods to solve problems in logistics and supply chain management and inform decisions in health systems and policymaking.

Dr. Swann’s research areas intersect in her work in humanitarian supply chains. She is developing educational and outreach programs for governmental and nongovernmental organizations that are involved in planning for and responding to humanitarian crises. Recent collaborations have been to improve planning and response to pandemic influenza and to design supply chains and prepositioning of inventory in global humanitarian supply chains. She has worked with numerous organizations including the American Red Cross, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the State of Georgia,  Home Depot, The Salvation Army, UPS, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and the World Health Organization.

Dr. Swann is a co-chair of the annual Health and Humanitarian Logistics conference and an editor of the Interfaces journal special issue on humanitarian applications. In 2004 she received an NSF CAREER award. In 2009-2010 she was a senior science advisor to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with the Preparedness and Modeling Unit working on the H1N1 response.
